I have been on Famiguard for a while and it was decent at first but lately it keeps logging me out randomly, the location data lags by like an hour sometimes, and their support takes forever to reply. I need something I can actually count on for keeping track of my kids when they are out.

First thing, iPhone or Android makes a huge difference. iOS has strict background process limits, so apps that rely on constant GPS polling get throttled. If you are tracking an iPhone, you want something that uses iCloud location sync as a fallback, not just raw GPS. Xnspy and a couple others do this. A lot of cheaper ones do not.
Second thing, check if the app registers as a foreground service on Android. You can see this under Settings > Battery > App Usage. If the tracking app is not showing up there it probably gets killed overnight and you wake up to an 8-hour gap in location history. That is a design flaw, not a bug

Another thing a lot of people skip is the free trial setup. Most apps limit what you can see during trial so you end up buying based on incomplete info. What I do is run the trial on my own second phone for three or four days before putting it on anyone else’s device. That way you actually see how it behaves, does it drain the battery, does it keep running after a restart, does the location lag at night when the phone is just sitting there.
Based on that test, Xnspy and FamiSafe both passed for me. The cheaper or free alternatives almost always failed the overnight test. Location would just stop updating around 2am and not resume until the phone was picked up and unlocked. Not useful

Ok practical notes from someone who has tested a few of these:
Battery drain matters more than people think. Some apps run so heavy that your kid notices the battery dropping faster and starts asking questions. FamiSafe and iSharing are both pretty light. Xnspy is medium. Some others are really bad.
Also check if the app works when the phone is on low power mode. Some apps basically stop updating when low power mode kicks in, which is exactly when kids enable it to squeeze more screen time out of their battery. Worth knowing before you commit to something.
