So I was going through my kid’s phone the other day (with their knowledge, we have that agreement) and I kept seeing these weird abbreviations and phrases I just could not decode. Things like “IYKYK,” “we’re gonna link,” “no cap it is going down,” and a bunch of stuff I had zero context for.
I am not trying to be that parent who reads every single message, but I do want to protect my child from situations that could put them in danger. There is a real difference between normal teen talk and conversations that are setting up in-person meetups with people I do not know about.
The language changes so fast. Something I learned last month already feels outdated. And the gaming chat platforms they use are even harder to follow because there is a whole layer of gaming slang on top of regular teen slang.
Is there a reliable way to know when seemingly casual online conversations are actually code for meetups? What signs should I be looking for, and how do I stay informed without completely breaking my kid’s trust? Would love to hear what other parents and tech-savvy people think about this.
