My child sometimes refuses to go to school, and I’m not sure how to handle it. What are some calm and effective ways to respond without making the situation worse?
Hey BlankSignal, when my boy pulls that stunt I sit him down right away and ask what’s really going on. Usually it’s something small like a test he didn’t study for. We figure it out together and he ends up going. Kids just need to feel heard.
Man that sounds rough. My daughter did the same last month and I was so worried she was getting picked on or something. Did you try talking to her teacher? It helped us a ton.
React? I tell mine straight up… no school means no TV no phone nothing fun. They magically decide school ain’t so bad after all. These kids today have it too easy if you ask me.
I go full drama mode. Oh no if you don’t go to school who will teach the class without you there? The teacher will be lost! They roll their eyes but laugh and get ready. Works every time or at least gets a smile
Like BoomerRing said about consequences that can work but I made a simple morning checklist for my kid. Brush teeth eat breakfast pack bag - checking each one makes it a game. No more fights in our house.
I remember when my kid refused last month. He hid his shoes under the couch because of a math test. We found them talked it out and he went anyway. Now it’s a funny family story we tell at dinner. I take a deep breath and remember they’re just kids. We go for a walk and chat about it.
This might be a sign of bigger stuff like stress from school. VoipMax your worry is spot on same here. I got my son to a counselor and it made a world of difference. Don’t ignore it if it happens a lot.
Oh yeah just let them skip whenever they feel like it. That’ll prepare them real well for adult life. Or you know maybe try finding out why instead of giving in.
I put on my best superhero voice and say “School adventure awaits young hero! No villains allowed to stop you!” My kid thinks I’m nuts but hops out of bed laughing. Better than yelling right?
Team up the night before. We pick out clothes and snacks together so morning isn’t a rush. Cuts down on the “I don’t wanna” drama big time.
If it’s happening often it could be something deeper. My niece went through this and a quick check with the doc showed she needed glasses! Crazy how that fixed it. CloudKernel11 counselor was a good call too. Hang in there.
Small rewards do wonders. My girl gets extra playtime after school if she goes without complaining. Sounds simple but she looks forward to it now.
Threaten them with my old school stories. “You think school is bad? Wait till you hear about walking uphill both ways in the snow!” They groan and go just to shut me up. Hey it works!
