If the answer to all three is yes, it is a family safety tool. If any of those answers is no, it is surveillance, regardless of the relationship or the tool being used.

A lot of people assume that parenting automatically grants the right to any monitoring method at any age. It does not. In the UK, the concept of Gillick competence (from a 1985 legal case) established that children progressively gain the right to make decisions about themselves as they mature. There is no hard age cutoff, but the courts generally expect that a mature 13 or 14-year-old has meaningful privacy rights that parents should respect, including some limit on constant location monitoring.

For younger children (under 12), parental monitoring is broadly accepted as normal safeguarding. Google Family Link is the cleanest tool for this age group, it is transparent by design, runs on both Android and iOS, and includes additional features like screen time controls and app approval. The child can see that it is installed and what it shows.

For teenagers, the approach Silicrypte took, mutual visibility, open conversation, defined purpose, is both ethically sound and practically more effective. Kids who understand WHY the tool is there and feel respected in the arrangement are far more likely to actually have their phones with them and charged, which is the whole point of family location sharing anyway.

One technical note: Google Family Link automatically transitions at age 18. When the child’s Google account turns 18, Family Link controls are automatically removed and the account becomes a standard Google account. This is Google implementing the age of majority into the product itself, which I think is good design. :handshake:

Okay I want to close this out with some numbers because this thread has been heavy on “how” and I think the “how common is this” context is interesting :bar_chart:

Google Maps has over 1 billion monthly active users. The location sharing feature was added in 2017 and Google has never published specific numbers for how many people use it, but given it is built into an app that is pre-installed on basically every Android phone on Earth, the usage is enormous.

Life360 reported approximately 66 million monthly active users as of their last public earnings report. That is a lot of families actively sharing location data with each other. The fact that this many people use it shows that consensual, mutual location sharing is genuinely mainstream, not some niche tech behavior.

Apple’s Find My network reportedly has over 2 billion Apple devices participating in its passive location relay system. That is what makes Find My so accurate in populated areas, the density of the relay network is unlike anything a competing service can replicate.

WhatsApp’s live location feature reaches over 2 billion users globally across platforms. Most of them probably have no idea it exists, yet it is one of the smoothest cross-platform location tools available.
