There is no way to do it except by knocking out third-party apps. But here is what you can do at least.
Use your Instagram notification to see a message. Make sure that you have turned on the Instagram message notification. When the notification arrives, you can read it from there. So, it will deliver a seen trigger.

You can put your mobile phone on airplane mode and then go to your Instagram chat and read the messages. It would not allow the other person to know that you have just seen the messages.
But when you connect to the internet again, it will show the screen. So, a short-term hack but a valuable one.

You can turn off activity status:
Go to your Profile > Menu (three lines) > Settings & Privacy > Messages & Story Replies > Show Activity Status > Toggle off “Show Activity Status” to prevent others from seeing your activity.
But this doesn’t stop you from showing as seen when you read their messages.
If you’re trying to check Instagram messages without triggering the dreaded “Seen”, here are the main things that actually work (and what to watch out for):
Notification Previews: Honestly, the easiest trick. If you get the message as a notification, you can just read it straight from your notification panel without opening IG. No “Seen,” no stress.
Airplane Mode Trick: Still one of the classics. Open Instagram, let the messages load, switch on Airplane Mode, then open the chat. Just make sure you fully close the app before turning Airplane Mode off again. Sometimes it works, sometimes IG gets smart - your mileage may vary.
Web Version: Using Instagram on a computer can give you slightly different behavior. Sometimes you can glance at message previews without triggering anything, but once you actually click into the chat, it’s basically game over - it’ll be marked as seen like usual.

Try the “Restrict” Move:
If you want to read someone’s messages without showing “Seen,” the Restrict feature is surprisingly handy.
Just open the DM thread, tap their name at the top, and hit Restrict.
After that, their messages get pushed into Message Requests, and you can read them there without triggering a read receipt.
It’ll only show “Seen” if you decide to unrestrict them and accept the request.
