Accuracy Risk
A 2023 study from the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute found that large language models produce factually incorrect responses roughly 15 to 20 percent of the time on knowledge-based questions, and the error rate increases in highly specific academic domains. For a child doing homework, this is not trivial. Subject areas like chemistry, biology, and current events carry the highest error rates.
Mitigation: Choose apps that cite sources inline. Apps that link to Wikipedia, textbooks, or verified academic sources let the child (and parent) verify claims.
Data Privacy Risk
Most free AI tutoring platforms generate revenue through data. The data collected typically includes: search queries, interaction logs, device identifiers, location data (sometimes), and behavioral patterns. Under COPPA, apps serving users under 13 must obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information. However, enforcement is inconsistent, and many apps simply set their minimum age to 13 to sidestep the requirement.
