Can I track my employees through the IMEI number? Or do I have to use an employee monitoring application?

Technically, yes, butIi don’t think that employers use the method.

IMEI tracking involves the cooperation of carriers and usually involves reporting the phone as lost/stolen.

I have seen the MDM software or monitoring application instead to track a phone. The reasons are obvious.

  • First, it provides real-time tracking and

  • Does not involve the carrier.

If your employer wants to monitor location or usage, they’re doing it through apps and policies already installed on the device - not by calling up the carrier with an IMEI number.

That’s a crazy question I saw today…. Why, man, why? :angry: You don’t need to track an employee’s phone with IMEI. Rather than having an employee monitoring application that is gonna track your employees’ phones with ease.

Yes, but they don’t need to.

A company phone commonly has built-in management software/application that tracks everything.

IMEI is more of a physical thing that is used to block a stolen phone.

In my experience managing corporate devices, we used MDM platforms that gave us far more control than IMEI ever could.

Bottom line:

company phone = company property = they can monitor it. Use it accordingly.
