What Made Me Try It
Okay so I tried PhoneSheriff last year when I was dealing with a situation where my 13 year old was spending way too much time on his phone past midnight. I needed something that could show me what was going on without being super obvious about it. A friend had mentioned it so I gave it a shot.
What I Found Out
The Good Parts
The setup was not bad. Got it running within like 20 minutes on an Android device. Call logs, messages, basic location, all of that worked. For a parent who just wants a basic overview of their kid’s phone activity, it does the job.
The Not So Good Parts
Here is the thing though. The app felt old. Like the dashboard looked like it had not been updated in years. Some features just did not load at all and customer support took 4 days to reply to me. That was frustrating

For basic stuff it works, but if you want something that feels modern and actually keeps up with newer Android versions, you might want to look around before committing.

I work in IT and when I decided to set up a parental monitoring solution for my household, I went in expecting to test PhoneSheriff properly. Not just install and forget actually look at the data quality, the update frequency, and how the app behaves on different Android versions.
What I Observed
Compatibility Problems
The app had real issues on Android 12 and above. Features like app usage tracking were either missing or giving incorrect data. From a technical standpoint that tells me the codebase is lagging behind current OS versions. That is not acceptable when you are paying for a service.
Data Syncing
Sync delays were noticeable. I was seeing data that was anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours behind. For a monitoring tool that is supposed to give you visibility, delayed data is basically useless in situations where timing matters.
Conclusion
If you are a non-technical user you may not notice these issues right away. But over time they add up. I ended up moving on and found better options in the market that are actively developed and maintained.

PhoneSheriff is not horrible but it is also not great 
it is like the middle child of parental monitoring apps. exists, does some things, but nobody is excited about it. I tried it for 2 months when I was monitoring my nephew’s device (he is 14, his parents asked me to help set it up). The GPS location feature worked about 70 percent of the time. The other 30 percent it just showed the last known location which was useless. Text monitoring was fine though. If you have super basic needs and just want call and text logs, it gets the job done. But do not expect premium features at that price point.
Switched to Xnspy after reading through threads like this one and I want to confirm, it is a solid option 
What stood out to me was the remote access feature. I did not have to physically touch the device after the initial setup. Everything from text messages to browsing history was accessible through the web dashboard. For a parent who is not super technical, that matters a lot. PhoneSheriff required me to keep messing with the device every time there was an update. Xnspy just runs in the background without me thinking about it. That alone saved me so much stress.
okay can I be sarcastic for a second… imagine paying for a monitoring app and then spending more time monitoring whether the app itself is working than actually monitoring your kid. When you use any monitoring app you are essentially sending personal data location, messages, call records to a third party server. I looked into both PhoneSheriff and Xnspy from that angle. If privacy is a concern for you (and it should be) that is something worth checking before you sign up for anything. Just a heads up for people who skip the fine print 
at the end of the day PhoneSheriff does what it says on the box for the most part. nothing more, nothing less. if you have a simple use case like just wanting to see call logs and a rough location for a younger kid it will probably be enough. but if you are trying to track social media, get real time alerts, or monitor an iPhone properly, you are going to hit walls pretty fast. I went through 3 different apps before landing on something that worked consistently. The journey was annoying but at least now I know what to look for. Read the feature list carefully before buying anything

I had a setup question at like 11pm and got a response within the hour. That alone puts it above PhoneSheriff in my book where I waited 4 days for a reply (shoutout to PixelPioneer23 for mentioning that earlier, felt very seen 
). The feature set is also broader. I was able to track iMessage, Snapchat activity, and location all in one dashboard. For anyone still on the fence between the two, I would say give Xnspy a real look before committing to PhoneSheriff.
