How to reduce screen time for kids?

Hey! Being a parent, my biggest worry is my child being addicted to screens and not partaking in any real-world activities. I don’t wanna impose strict rules on my child, so I am looking for ways that would help me reduce their screen time. All suggestions are welcome.

Honestly, I get where you are coming from but kids are gonna be on screens no matter what you do. It’s just how the world works now. My nephew is 8 and he knows more about tech than I do. Maybe instead of trying to reduce it, you could make sure they are doing something useful with it? Like educational apps or creative stuff. Just a thought.

We had the same problem last year with our 6-year-old. What worked for us was setting up activities that are just more fun than screens. We started doing family bike rides on Saturday mornings and he actually looks forward to it now. It’s not about taking away the iPad, it’s about giving them something better to do. Also helps that we do it together so he’s not feeling like he’s missing out while everyone else is on their phones.

You are worried about this NOW? Where were all you parents ten years ago when this started becoming a problem? Sorry if that sounds harsh but I see so many kids glued to tablets at restaurants and parks and nobody says anything. Then suddenly everyone’s shocked that there’s an issue. Look, the solution is pretty simple, just don’t give them unlimited access. Set boundaries. They’ll complain for like a week and then they’ll adapt. Kids are tougher than you think.

What helped us was creating screen-free zones in the house. We also got her into painting and she genuinely enjoys it more than watching videos most days. Sometimes kids just need options they haven’t tried yet. They don’t know what they’re missing if they’ve never done it.

My kids are 4 and 7, and honestly we just try to keep them busy. Sports, playdates, helping with cooking, even just playing outside. When they are occupied they forget about screens pretty quickly. The real challenge is when YOU need a break and the tablet is right there. That’s when it’s tempting to just hand it over. But if you can push through those moments and suggest something else, it gets easier. Not gonna lie though, some days I totally cave and that’s okay too. We’re all doing our best here.

Here’s what nobody wants to hear: you gotta walk the talk. I noticed my son was always on his phone, so I checked how much time I was spending on mine. Turns out I was on it like 4 hours a day. How can I tell him to put it down when I’m scrolling through stuff all evening?

I work in IT and I’ll be straight with you , screens aren’t the enemy. It’s what they are doing on them that matters. My 9-year-old spends time coding, making digital art, and yeah sometimes playing games. But she’s learning stuff. Maybe redirect the screen time instead of cutting it completely? There’s a lot of good stuff they can do on devices if you point them in the right direction.

Have you tried just… talking to your kid about it? Like actually sitting down and explaining why you are concerned? I did this with my 11-year-old and it went better than expected. We made a plan together where he could earn extra screen time by doing other activities first. Reading for 30 minutes = 30 minutes of gaming. Helping with yard work = an hour. Now he’s motivated to do stuff because he wants the reward. It’s not perfect but at least he’s not fighting me on it anymore.

Okay so this might sound weird but it worked for my family. We started having tech-free Sundays. Nobody gets phones or computers or TV for the whole day. First time we did it, everyone was SO bored. My kids were literally wandering around the house like ‘what do we do now?’ But then we played board games, went to the park, made cookies together. Now they actually don’t mind it. Maybe try one day a week to start?
