I need some real help here and I am hoping this community has been through something similar. My daughter just turned 13 and she has had TikTok for a few months now. In the beginning I sat with her while she scrolled and everything seemed completely harmless, funny videos, cooking clips, dance trends. I was not worried at all.
But over the last few weeks something shifted. She is on it for hours in her room with the door closed. When I walk in she tilts the screen away from me immediately, which is something she never used to do. She has started getting a little defensive whenever I ask general questions about what she does online, nothing confrontational, just basic mom questions.
I am not trying to ban TikTok because I know from talking to other parents that banning it usually just means they find another way to access it and then you have even less visibility than before. What I actually want is to understand what is happening on her account without going through her phone every single evening like some kind of nightly audit. That approach feels wrong to me and I do not think it builds anything good between us.
So my real questions are:
- Is there an app or tool that can track TikTok activity specifically, not just block it?
- Can I see what videos she is watching, what accounts she follows, who messages her?
- Does TikTok itself have parental features that actually do something useful?
- How do I set any of this up without needing a computer science degree?
- What should I realistically expect to see and not see when I use these tools?
I want practical answers. Real steps, real apps, honest expectations. If you have been through this as a parent I especially want to hear what actually worked for you because I am out of ideas.
